Geocaching - A World Wide Treasure Hunt for Everyone!

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game that is played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with a GPS or Smartphone. Played by all types of people, the basic idea is to use a GPS or Smartphone to locate a hidden container – called a geocache – then share your experience online with the rest of the world!

Geocaching.com logoGeocaching bridges the gap between technology and active play. It is a great reason to get outdoors and can be enjoyed by people of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities – it’s a great way to bring friends and family together whilst having fun and enjoying unstructured, free-range play.

You can combine geocaching with camping, hiking, biking, boarding, canoeing, walking or any other activity you can think of.

Geocaching can be incorporated into almost anything and everything that you do, including:

  • Community Building – who’d have guessed that park was in your neighbourhood?  Or that there was a swing attached to a tree around the corner from your house?
  • Education – Get the kids out of the classroom and into nature!  Create mathematical challenges using latitude and longitude; incorporate geocaching into society and environment courses; and encourage team-work and social interaction between your students!
  • Environment – ‘Cache In, Trash Out’ encourages all geocachers to collect rubbish as they search for the ‘treasure’ – what a great way of ensuring your neighbourhood stays clean and attractive!
  • Inclusion – Handicaching identifies caches that are accessible by wheelchair, and language barriers can be bridged through the ability to translate cache clues into other languages...plus it’s a very visual activity!

Why not make it a part of your next family outing, holiday or sports club event, or set up your own Geocache and watch how many people find it?

Geocaching is an easy, inexpensive way of using technology in a positive way to influence fun and active recreation in the outdoors and in your community – so why not try it out NOW!?
