Ho Ho Ho...Hang Ten these Holidays - December 2011

December 2011

Family Nature Clubs

Santa has been out catching a few waves before the silly season starts and really wants to see more free-range kids out there sharing in the fun!  As an early Christmas present, he has given Nature Play WA vouchers for free surf lessons with Surfing WA, which we are passing on to the first 20 groups to create a new Family Nature Club. The vouchers will entitle your club to a free learn-to-surf group lesson for up to 16 people (must be 5 years or older) at Trigg or Mullaloo Beach this summer. To register a new club either e-mail us at info@natureplaywa.org.au or call 9492 9815.

Surfing

If you miss out on a surf voucher, you can still learn some stylin’ surf moves.  Starting from Monday December 12 right up until Australia Day, Surfing WA will be holding ‘Holiday Learn to Surf Programs’ at Trigg Beach, as well as running the ‘Vegemite Surf Groms Holiday Program’ for 5-12 year olds at Trigg and Mullaloo Beaches.  For more information visit www.learntosurfwa.com/bookhere or call 9448 0004.

Camping

If surfing isn't really your thing, why not try camping?  The Department of Sport and Recreation will be running some awesome school holiday camps for kids, including a 3-day Wet ‘N’ Wild Camp at Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp, a 2-day Hawaiian Luau at Woodman Point Recreation Camp and a Surf’s Up program at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp.  For more information, look under the “Holiday Programs’ banner at http://www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps.

Orienteering

Orienteering WA is navigating its way through its popular ‘MetrO’ series events throughout the summer in the parks, streets and beaches of Perth on Saturday afternoons.  Maps are provided so you can find your way from checkpoint to checkpoint and help for beginners is available at every event.  Entry Fees: Adult $15, Concession/Junior $7, Groups (up to 5) $20. Details at http://wa.orienteering.asn.au/events/summer/.

Nearer to Nature

Enjoy the environment in all its splendour this summer with Department of Environment and Conservation’s ‘Nearer to Nature’ program.  Join Faerie Cara on a journey of mystical discovery into our enchanted environment. Grab a torch and join in on an evening of nocturnal delights at the Perth Hills Centre or go ‘behind the scenes’ at Chidlow Marsupial Hospital. Bookings are required for all activities, so please call (08) 9295 2244 or for more information visit www.dec.wa.gov.au/n2n.

Mountain Biking

During the holidays, Schwheelies will be offering a number of biking programs for families and children.  Activities include obstacle course building and riding, single track cycling on some of Australia's best mountain bike tracks, cycling games and many more fun interactive activities.  Go to http://www.schwheelies.com.au/whats-happening for details.  Bookings are essential.

Fruit Picking

There is nothing like fruit picked fresh from the tree!  Spring Valley Orchard, near Donnybrook, takes families or groups on tours of their orchard and farm buildings and allows fruit picking. Plums are available from mid January to mid March and apples can be picked from late April till mid June. Cost is $5 per child and $10 per adult, which includes a kilo of fruit. As it is a working farm, you will need to organise your visit in advance. Contact diana@organic-orchard.com.au or check the website www.organic-orchard.com.au.
