Autumn Playlist!

Autumn is the best time to get out and about in Western Australia; the weather is mild with sunny days and light winds, it is still warm enough to go for a swim and you can have campfires!

With this in mind the team at Nature Play WA have come up with ten of our favourite Autumn activities and locations.  We have split them evenly over regional WA and the metropolitan area because the April school holidays have long been a favourite for visiting relatives and friends.  Spend Autumn getting outdoors in our beautiful state!

Metropolitan

Penguin Island

The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park near Rockingham is a great place to visit in Autumn and one of the best ways to see it is from a kayak with our friends at Capricorn Sea Kayaking.

John Forrest National Park

The hiking trails in John Forrest National Park offer an easy way to experience a bush walk close to Perth for all the family. There are plenty of animals about and the cooler weather and clear days make for perfect hiking conditions

Mountain Biking at Kalamunda

If you have never been mountain biking then the April school holidays provide the perfect time to start and our friends at Rock and Roll Mountain Biking can give you the perfect introduction with the special kids course at the trailhead; they can even help out with bikes!

Martin’s Tank Campground

An hour from Perth the Yalgorup National Park is an easily accessible camp ground  nestled amongst peppermint and tuart trees on the edge Martins Tank Lake. It is ideal for families wanting to get away for a quick camping trip but not travel too far from the city. For those in the northern suburbs of Perth the Yanchep National Park also hosts a range of school holiday activities.

Rottnest Island

With so many wonderful attractions on Rottnest Island, it's very difficult to pin down a favourite activity; there's just so much to do!  From sightseeing, bike riding and segway tours, to fishing, swimming, snorkelling and surfing, what's not to love!  And our Friends of Nature Play WA partners Rottest Express and Rottnest Fast Ferries have some great offers for our members, to get you to and from the island for less!

Regional

Wharncliffe Mill Margaret River

A firm favourite with Nature Play WA staff, the team at Wharncliffe Mill have developed a great facility tailor made for family nature play with camping, mountain biking and hiking all on offer and all situated minutes from the attractions of Margaret River, it can get busy over the school holidays and the recently refurbished Contos Campground further South is a good alternative.

Coral Coast

Many WA families use the April school holidays to head north to the clear waters and desert landscapes of the Coral Coast to snorkel the Ningaloo reef, or explore Cape Range National Park and it is easy to see why this has long been a traditional WA April holiday favourite.  Exmouth Adventure Co. has great half and full day tours to discover this magical spot.

Dryandra Woodlands

One of the few places left where you can catch a glimpse of WA’s animal emblem; the numbat in the wild along with echidnas and a whole host of native birds and animals and it is less than two hours from Perth. The Dryandra Woodland, Lions Dryandra Village and the amazing Barna Mia animal sanctuary offer a range of accommodation and camping options as well as the unique ability to interact with bilbys, boodies and wallabies on a night stalk!  The Department of Parks and Wildlife has a great deal on the night stalk and accommodation for families looking to explore!

Kalbarri

Another firm favourite with WA families in Autumn, Kalbarri offers everything from canoeing, horse riding, fishing, swimming and hiking in the amazing Kalbarri National Park and our friends at Kalbarri Abseil can take you well out of your comfort zone for those families looking for a new challenge.

Campfires!

Autum is the perfect time of year to enjoy a campfire; the fire bans are over (you can discover where Fire Bans are in place at the DFES website) and the weather is warm and dry enough to find plenty of firewood at hand. If you haven’t had much experience lighting or cooking over campfires make sure you have a look at our Intro to Camping Videos; there are even a few of our favourite recipes for you to try!
