Stories of Country

Nature Play WA recognises the important and ongoing connections between Aboriginal cultures and the natural world (country).

Through our Every Kid in a Park project, we will be working with representatives of Aboriginal communities around the state to learn more about their Connection to Country through stories and illustrations. We are incredibly thankful for the generosity of spirit those communities have shown in sharing their stories with us and allowing us to onshare them with you.

Through this project we hope to play a small part in helping WA families recognise and appreciate the diversity, richness and beauty of Aboriginal cultures and their deep connections to our magnificent natural world.

A photo of the outside of the Canning River Eco Education Centre on a sunny day.

For over 10 years, Tracy Lyon has proudly worked as an administration officer and community liaison at Canning River Eco Education Centre (CREEC). Fishing for all at Woodman Point with Fishability

A volunteer from Fishability assists an older man with fishing on the Woodman Point Ammo Jetty. She is crouched down next to the man who is sitting on a camping chair. She has wears a beige coloured hat with black sunglasses sitting on the peak and a long sleeve blue shirt with the Fishability logo on the right. Her blonde hair is in a pony tail and sits on her shoulder. She is holding a fishing rod and a fish that has been caught, and is grinning at the older man. The older man grins back at her. He is wearing a yellow, wide-brim sun hat, black sunglasses and a checkered long-sleeve button-up shirt that is green, grey and white in colour with light blue jeans. The water can just be seen behind them, but it is out of focus.

Fishability is a not-for-profit association on a mission to break down the barriers between people with disabilities and recreational fishing. Their team of volunteers run sessions at accessible locations around Perth (onboard a vessel or a jetty), where people with disabilities can learn new skills with the help of motorised equipment, create lifelong friendships, and […]

A photograph of Mike Robinson. He is an older man, perhaps in his 60s or 70s. He wears a cap, a long sleeve shirt and jeans. He stands on a trail at Mundy Regional Park that overlooks Lesmurdie Falls. The background is made up of a hill, mostly green with shrubs, but a few dark grey boulders.

Mike Robinson is the Chair of member-run group, Friends of Upper Lesmurdie Falls (FOULF). They’re on a mission to restore native flora, undertake structural rehabilitation, improve the amenities and acknowledge the history at Mundy Regional Park.  We were lucky enough to take a walk around the park with Mike. With a wealth of knowledge under […]
