Paul Berry or ‘Bezza’ as he is affectionately called by his friends is the driving force behind Surf N’ Dirt Adventure Tours. In 2009 at the age of 24 Paul arrived in Margaret River on a surfing trip and instantly knew that he had found the place where he wanted to spend the rest of his life. He fell in love with the raw and ragged coastline, the large and powerful surf, tall Karri forests, meandering rivers and the friendly locals.
For years Paul would show his overseas and Australian friends around the Margaret River Region and they would always tell him that he should set up an adventure tour company. Throughout this time he worked at the local pub, taught people to surf and hosted wine tours around the region, but it was always a pipedream of his to start up his own adventure tours.
Paul spent so many years chasing adventures around the world and now he finds himself in the very fortunate position of having the world come to him to experience their own adventures. It is a responsibility that he doesn’t take lightly. If you are on one of Paul’s tours then you will be looked after like family and it won’t take long for his enthusiasm and love of the Margaret River Region to rub off on you. He is a natural people person who is charismatic, entertaining, always upbeat and has a deep respect for the environment. His broad smile, relaxed nature, love of adventure and gregarious laugh (one of his nicknames is the Parrot after all!) are the perfect ingredients for any tour of Margaret River.
Great Escape Tours
Your outstanding and memorable adventure begins when you're picked up from your accommodation in their trusty 4WD (which is affectionately known as the Dugong). More details of each tour can be found below. After lunch you embark on a tasting tour at the regions finest boutique wineries, micro breweries and local gourmet producers. Taste awarding winning wines and beers from the region and sample mouth watering venison, chocolate and cheese as we visit the local gourmet outlets. Learn about the history of the wine industry in the region as we customize the stops to suit the group’s preferences. Celebrate an amazing day spent out in nature with new friends, by toasting the highlights of the day and soaking up each other’s company until it is unfortunately time to be transferred back to your accommodation.
The soft-top beginner boards will be strapped to the roof, but if you are a competent surfer then feel free to bring your own board along. They will take you off road into Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park where depending on the surf conditions, some four wheel driving may be required to reach the beach of choice. As Paul pilots the Dugong across the rocky and sandy terrain he is likely to inform you about the history of surfing in Margaret River and how it has helped shape the region. Once you arrive you will be provided with a soft top board and a warm and flexible full length wetsuit. They have a range of board and wetsuit sizes available to choose from so that you are comfortable before you enter the water. Paul is a nationally accredited level one Surf Coach who holds a Surf Rescue qualification and a Senior First Aid qualification. He is highly trained and is an experienced and competent surfer who has pushed his limits in different surf conditions all around the world. Your safety and enjoyment are his number one priorities.
Paul will impart his ocean knowledge and teach you techniques and surf etiquette so that you are able to identify the safest location to enter the water, how to navigate your way through the waves and of course how to catch a broken wave, stand up and surf it to the beach. He will be beside you in the water the entire time, pushing you into waves, offering feedback, encouragement and a lot of high fives. It is not uncommon for dolphins to drop by and join in on the fun too. If you are already an experienced and competent surfer then you can paddle your own board out the back and get barreled as the rest of the group cheers you on from the inside sandbar. Surfing is such a unique activity that once you have stood up and surfed a wave your life may never be quite the same again. If you ask Paul though then he’ll tell you that catching the surfing bug is always for life’s betterment.
Once you’ve washed the salt and sand off and changed back into some comfortable clothes you’ll be taken to the majestic Boranup Karri Forest where you can relax and rest your paddling arms as a unique sit down picnic lunch is provided to you amongst the wildflowers (seasonal) in a secluded location within the stunning forest setting. Relive the best waves ridden and laugh about the wipeouts as you enjoy delicious food and great company.
Mountain Biking Tour
After pick up, you then venture off-road into Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park along old logging tracks as the majestic Karri trees of Boranup Forest tower above us. Jump aboard one of their mountain bikes and allow them to guide you as you make our way through the forest along fire trails and single tracks, with changing terrain and more than a few challenges. Exhilarating downhill runs and the odd log jump characterizes our Margaret River mountain biking tour and will no doubt quicken your heart rate. Lose yourself as you pedal along and the pristine environment swallows us completely. If you are lucky you might spot an Emu or Kookaburra watching on as we pedal past.
Once the Margaret River mountain biking tour is complete you can relax and kick your feet up as a unique sit down picnic lunch is provided to you amongst the wildflowers (seasonal) in a secluded location within the stunning forest setting. Relive the best aspects of the ride as you enjoy delicious food and great company.
Nenture off road into Blackwood River National Park. The eucalyptus trees and native Australian bush will bring a smile to your face as Cockatoos and Kangaroos welcome you into their domain. Make yourself comfortable in their spacious double kayaks as you paddle upstream exploring the banks and tranquil waters of the stunning Blackwood River as native wildlife entertains both above and below. The soundtrack of birds and wildlife combined with the gentle splicing of water from your paddling stroke will send you into a relaxed and happy trance. Keep dry if you wish or cool off with a refreshing swim. Learn about the significance of the area to the local Aboriginal people and the trials of the early pioneers as lunch is enjoyed on the bank of the river.
Paul says, “I love what I do for a living and feel very humbled to be able to meet so many great and interesting people on a daily basis and get to know them personally.
"I place a lot of importance on showing people a really good time and always endeavour to make every tour the best that it can possibly be. The reputation of the Margaret River Region means a lot to me and at the end of the day I just want people to have enjoyed experiencing it as much as I do. Nothing makes me happier then when people tell me that they’ve had an awesome day and can’t wait to come back again. It is an absolute pleasure showing people around my favourite locations in a region that I regard as being as close to paradise as you can find. If you require any assistance with anything at all whilst you are in Margaret River then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Hopefully I will be able to catch up with you whilst you are here!”
