Kathleen Day Playgroup offered the following insight into their Nature Playground development.
External upgrade including dedicated nature play area completed March 2012.
The nature play area includes a double fort with a suspended bridge, large wooden tee-pee, stepping stones, a ‘sleeper maze’ and a raised log path with large climbing branches. We have
also used large ceramic and fibreglass ornaments
which the kids can sit and stand on.
Cost breakdown (inc GST)
- Mulch (55 cubic metres) donated by Mainroads and City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder
- Machinery hire was donated by Onsite Hire and TruBlu Hire
- Native Plants donated by Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group
- Hardware Supplies, $2800
- Ornaments, $750
- Park benches, $720
- Reticulation, $1800
- 75 metres of artificial turf, $25,600
- Two new large shade structures, $20,800
- Signage, $500
We consulted with our members (parents) in the first instance to work out what we wanted the centre to ‘look like’. We then liaised with local businesses in the design of the nature play area and in selecting appropriate native plants for the areas.
Did you use a builder?
The nature play area was completed by a dedicated team of parents who undertook the project in stages. The artificial turf and shade structures were installed by local businesses. Volunteers spent a total of over 900 hours working on the project.
Would you consider doing anything differently next time?
In a perfect world, we would love to have included ‘real’ grass instead of artificial turf however with Kalgoorlie’s climate and the care needed to maintain good quality grass, it was not feasible.
Keys to success
Parent buy in and grant funding from Royalties for Regions (GEDC), City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Lotterywest.
