Rock and Roll!
A concert in the bush? Not this time! A mountain biking experience in the Perth Hills is what we enjoyed last week thanks to Jenny and Mark at Rock and Roll Mountain Biking.
The drive from Perth city was around 45 minutes, and wound up near Kalamunda Camel Farm in a lovely native bush area. There was plenty of parking in the shade, and it's a popular spot as there was a steady stream of visitors coming and going even on a weekday afternoon.
Our bikes weren't quite right for this adventure, so we hired a couple for the afternoon, then headed to the start of the beginner trail. Mark gave the kids a few tips and safety instructions before they started off to explore. The trail is about 800m and takes 3-4 minutes to complete.
Each circuit saw the kids gain confidence and speed. The trail offered enough challenge for our newbie mountain bikers, and they happily went back for more, and experimented riding along obstacles and trying small jumps.
Jack lost a bit of bark, but after some first aid by Jenny after my weeny bandaid failed to stick to a sweaty knee he was back on the bike and into the thick of it again. He was pretty pleased that he might end up with a scar to remember the day out!
Mark explained that the area has over 50km of biking trails, all graded for difficulty and (provided you have your own bikes) free for visitors to explore. We plan to invite our family nature club back soon and explore further, perhaps booking a group workshop to get the kids started.
If you are looking for some school holidays fun drop in to see Mark, Jenny and their lovely kids, and don't forget to feed the chooks and goats too!
