A Berry Good Nature Play Outing

Perth's strawberry farms are currently in full swing, with various locations offering strawberry picking until mid-December.

When I lived in Japan, I noticed how simple seasonal activities are embraced by young and old. In early summer, families flock to countryside streams at dusk to see glowing fireflies; Spring is not spring without a picnic under the cherry blossoms; Autumn explorations are all about finding the perfect spot to view trees with leaves of vibrant reds, yellows and oranges, and winter nights are best spent wandering amongst impressive Christmas lights displays. The new year in Japan is prime time to bundle your family off to a strawberry farm, to pick and eat sweet red berries to your heart’s content.

Although I’ve had to farewell many favourite Japanese seasonal traditions since moving home, I’m pleased to discover that strawberry picking is an activity Perth offers – and the time to pick is now! Strawberry farms are currently in full swing, with various locations around Perth offering strawberry picking until around mid-December.

It’s a great chance for families to get outdoors and engage in meaningful (and, let’s be honest, delicious!) nature play.

Here are a few local strawberry farms to get you started on some berry fun adventures with the kids. If you visit the farms, don’t forget to share your photos to social media with the #natureplaywa!
