WA Australian of the Year: Finalists named

A BREAST cancer researcher, an online education pioneer, a pediatrician and a philanthropist are the finalists for the 2017 WA Australian of the Year.

The WA finalists in the Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Local Hero Award categories have been released.

The WA winners will be announced on Sunday, November 20, at Government House in Perth and they will join the national finalists in Canberra on January 25 next year.

An award-winning journalist and former weekly newspaper columnist, Griffin Longley started observing that kids had forgotten how to play and that unstructured play — or “mucking around” — had almost disappeared.
