The Talk N Walk app, a component of Nature Play WA’s program promoting social connection, friendships and family for improved physical activity and mental health, has been named joint-winner of a new award – ‘Best Practice in Children’s Consultation’.
Sharing the award with Telethon Kids Institute’s Sun Safe app, Talk N Walk was honoured with this accolade, supported by the Commissioner for Children and Young People, at the recent IPAA WA Achievement Awards.
Nature Play WA CEO, Dr Kelsie Prabawa-Sear said, “Through the co-design process we consulted with a diverse cohort of 103 children and young people to develop an innovative, scalable, digital solution to the dramatic drop-off in physical activity in tween and teenage girls that affects their mental and physical health,”
“The co-design and piloting process of the Talk N Walk app enabled the girls to share what was important to them and why they aren’t more active, empowering them to work with us to create a solution.”
The team at Nature Play WA were honoured to be recognised in this way, and for helping make this all possible, we would like to thank:
- The students and teachers at St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls (Junior School), Mount Lawley Senior High School – Official and Central Midlands Senior High School in Moora who worked with us on the co-design process, along with the girls and young people from around WA who took part in the testing and pilot phase of the app, without whom we would not have such an inviting, engaging and rewarding app to share,
- Healthway and Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for funding Talk N Walk through the Innovation Challenge Program (designed to support innovative ideas that create physical activity opportunities for inactive young people, girls and women across WA),
- Telethon7 for their funding to support an expanded development, testing and piloting phase of the app, allowing us to further build on the work done as part of the co-design process, and supporting the official launch of the app at the Telethon Family Weekend, and
- Humaan our incredible app design partners who jumped at the chance to work with us (and 100+ girls!) to create something wonderful!
