What is Outdoor Classroom Day?

The Outdoor Classroom Day movement is a day to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. More than just one day, our aim is to get as many children as possible playing and learning outside, every day, with a celebration of outdoor learning and play on Thursday 19 May 2022 and 3 November 2022.

Why? Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. Play not only teaches critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, but is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.  With increasing pressures on childhood, children today are too often overprotected, overscheduled, and overly attached to screens, which is why it’s more crucial than ever before to help get children outdoors.

COVID-19 and Nature

As the coronavirus crisis continues, children around the world are spending more time indoors and in front of screens. Our community of teachers and parents are concerned about the impact this is having on children’s wellbeing.

Fortunately for Australian children, our restrictions are much less harsh than those of other countries. Still, with conditions and updates changing every day, life now looks quite different from how it has in the past.

Connecting to nature can restore our sense of wellbeing. For children, this connection is best made through play – whether outdoors in nature or indoors with natural elements.

Get Involved

It’s easy to get involved and there is something everyone can do!

If you’re a teacher, educator or school administrator and new to outdoor learning, why not use Outdoor Classroom Day to try it out? Or, if you’re already involved in outdoor learning, use the day to celebrate what you do and inspire other teachers around the world to join in.

If you’re a parent, talk to your child’s school about the importance of outdoor learning and play. Ask them how they will get involved and offer to help out on the day if they need a bit of extra support.

If you work for an organisation that cares about children, nature, education or the environment, speak to us about how you can get involved.
