Outdoor Learning, Outdoor Play and the School Environment Literature Review
Nature Play WA was contracted by the Western Australian Department of Education to undertake a small research project examining three critical elements to improving student experience and learning in school settings: outdoor learning, outdoor play and the school environment.
Specifically, three key areas were examined:
โข Designing for play;
โข Designing for outdoor learning; and
โข Beyond infrastructure, where policy meets place.
The Importance of This Review
Children spend anywhere up to 40 hours a week at school. Research demonstrates that the physical environment of the school significantly impacts social, educational and behavioural outcomes, and this impact is amplified in lower socio-economic and urban areas.
This growing field of research is very valuable and should be considered in new school planning.
The findings of 45 research documents were evaluated in preparation of this detailed literature review with the information useful for any stakeholders involved in the design and installation of outdoor learning and play spaces for children. The 16 page review document is available as a free download via the link provided below.
